How to Prepare Documents for the IRS Document Upload Tool

Use this checklist to prepare document files before responding through the IRS Document Upload Tool. It covers file preparation; it does not determine which evidence your tax case requires.

01 Start with the official notice

The IRS describes this tool as a way to respond to a notice or letter. It is not a tax-return filing channel. Start at the official IRS help page linked below and read your notice.

02 Have the requested identifiers ready

The IRS lists an access code, if provided, or the notice number or title, the name shown on the notice, and the relevant taxpayer identification number. If you have no access code, its instructions allow selection of the notice or letter number. Check that selection carefully.

03 Prepare a readable working copy

Keep your original records separately. Review the copy you intend to submit: check the first and last pages, page order, dates, names, amounts and any small print. Use a neutral filename you can recognize in the file picker.

For a scan, inspect the page edges and confirm that nothing requested has been cut off. If a page is unclear, prepare a better copy before uploading. Avoid reducing quality solely to produce the smallest file.

04 Check the live upload requirements

The IRS help page lists JPG, PNG and PDF as supported document formats. Check the upload screen for its current size, page-count and other requirements. This guide does not assume an older published limit still applies.

05 Submit through the official service

Keep taxpayer identifiers and case documents within the official workflow. Do not send them to RevifyHub. If you need to adjust a sensitive PDF, use an appropriate local workflow and inspect the result.

06 Keep a record of completion

The IRS says the tool provides receipt confirmation. Retain that confirmation with a copy of the files you submitted. For uncertainty about the requested response, follow your notice or seek qualified assistance.

Before you begin

  • Correct notice identified.
  • Required documents assembled.
  • Copies readable and complete.
  • Current upload rules checked.
